Mass Resolution 32703

The Massachusetts Senate Takes Action Urging Congress to Rectify Beede Waste Oil Cleanup

On March 27, 2003, a resolution offered by State Senator Steven C. Panagiotakos memorializing the Congress of the United States to enact legislation eliminating inequities created by the so-called Superfund Law was passed by the Massachusetts Senate. Twenty five (25) senators were co-signers of the resolution.

The New England Service Station & Automotive Repair Association (NESSARA) had been working closely with Senator Panagiotakos for several months on behalf of its members to get this resolution passed.  Senator Panagiotakos has taken this matter at heart since many of his constituents talked with him about these huge sums of money that they were being demanded to contribute for the cleanup of the Beede Waste Oil Site.

The resolution, the first of its kind in the country, urges the Congress of the United States to adopt legislation that will bring prompt relief and equitable remedy to these small business owners, who, together with their employees, genuinely fear for their businesses, their livelihoods and the future well-being of their families.

The resolution further resolves that a copy be transmitted forthwith by the Clerk of the Senate to the President of the United States to the presiding officer of each branch of Congress and to the members thereof from this Commonwealth.
