NESSARA Lobbying Efforts
MEETING WITH CONGRESSMAN CAPUANO
On February 4, 2003, NESSARA members met with Congressman
Capuano at his Cambridge office to discuss the filing of a new bill.
H.R. 3788 died with the 107th Congress. Congressman Capuano said that
he would definitely file the bill again. Attending the meeting were Sarkis
Vosbigian, T.H.S. Auto Service, South Weymouth, MA, Rafael Castillo,
Aris Auto, Inc Somerville, MA, Steven Clayman Advance Muffler & Brake
Co, Cambridge, Ray Magliozzi, Good News Garage, Cambridge, Robert O'Keefe,
McKenna & O'Keefe Auto Repair, Inc, Lowell, MA, Dick Poulin Executive
Director, and Kate Auspitz, the Congressman's Issues Director.
NESSARA members need to be active in getting the other
members of the congregational delegation to jump on board as co-sponsors,
so call your representative today and ask that he co-sponsor this bill.
NESSARA GOES TO WASHINGTON
Paul O'Connell, NESSARA president and J. Richard Poulin,
Executive director along with members Robert O' Keefe, McKenna & O'Keefe
Auto Repair, Inc, Lowell, MA, and Brian Creegan, Brian's Auto Service,
Inc, Lowell, MA will be going to Washington to participate in what is
called the "2003 Aftermarket Legislative Summit" on Feb. 25-26.
They will be meeting with other associations and members of Congress
to lobby for legislation specific to the industry e.g., the Superfund
(used oil exemption), the Right to Repair Bill, etc.
Schedule of meetings as of this writing:
February 25
- 2 PM Meet with Congressman James McGovern (3rd District,
MA)
- 3:30 PM Senator Inhofe's Staff . Senator InHofe was
a co-sponsor of Senate Bill 1495 with Senator Bob Smith of NH. Senator
Inhofe is now chairman of the committee of Environment and Public Works
where this bill is languishing.
February 26
- 11:30 AM Meet with new elected Senator Sununu of NH
- 1:30 PM Meet with Congressman Bass of NH
- 2:30 PM Meet with Congressman Meehan ( 5th District,
MA)
- 3:30 PM Meet with Congressman Tierney (6th District,
MA)
- 4:15 PM Meet with Senator Chafee , RI
Congressman Barney Frank's office called and he will meet
with us at his Newton office at a later date.
Beede Waste Oil Site
On Friday, January 28, 2003, NESSARA was informed by Senator
Kerry's scheduler that he is too busy to meet with NESSARA members to
discuss this situation that is affecting so many businesses in New England.
