Service Station Dealers of America and Allied Trades

November 15, 2001

We need your help!

SSDA-AT is lobbying diligently for legislation which will exempt service station dealers and repair facility operators from the retroactive liability provision of Superfund.

The Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works is currently considering 2 bills-H.R. 2869 and S. 1495.

H.R. 2869 contains SSDA-AT supported legislation on Brownfield's and the small business exemption for municipal landfills.  S. 1495 contains the broad used oil exemption.

Currently there is almost unanimous support on the Committee for H.R. 2869.  All Republican members support S. 1495, but we do not yet have a single Democrat on the bill.

The following Democrats serve on the Environment and Public Works Committee:

James Jeffords (Vermont)
Max Baucus (Montana)
Harry Reid (Nevada)
Bob Graham (Florida)
Joseph Lieberman (Connecticut)
Barbara Boxer (California)
Ron Wyden (Oregon)
Thomas Carper (Delaware)
Hillary Rodham Clinton (New York)
Jon Corzine (New Jersey)

NESSARA is initiating a telephone campaign in Vermont.  WMDA is organizing a meeting with Delaware dealers and Carper.  New York is working on Clinton.

If there is anything that any affiliate can do with any of these Democrats, please call NESSARA Headquarters at 1-800-762-9734.

    Our message is clear:
  1. Pass H.R. 2869
  2. Amend S. 1495 into H.R. 2869 and move the bills forward as one bill.

This could be our only chance to amend Superfund in this Congress. This is an extremely important piece of legislation.  The Committee could move a bill as early as next week.  We need your help now!  Thank you.

Sincerely,

Roy E. Littlefield

Executive Vice President
